"I'm dreaming of a white Christmas, just like the ones I used to know ... where the tree tops glisten, and children listen ... to hear sleigh bells in the snow ... "

We wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas and send all of our love, near and far!

Christmas Frock

Mother has finished stitching the lace sleeves
to my Christmas frock.

I do love a bit of lace, velvet and satin
for the holidays...

and of course, a brooch of significant size.

I dare say, it is quite a bold frock ...

I shall remain quite the lady, though,
and one shall only see the peep toes

of my dancing shoes.

I must remain light of foot, as I expect Mother shall
dress my hair with white ostrich feathers ...

Rosette Comes to Tea

Today, I brought a friend to tea ...
She was quite obliging ...
She listened to my every word ...
She never spilled a drop ...
And when tea time was over,
She nestled quietly on my shelf.

Lifelong Friends

Julianna,

When I was a tiny toddler,
you came wiggling into the world.
When I began to talk, you began to walk.
Together we grew ...
We've played together and laughed together.
When I was five years old,
I asked you to marry me ...
You did not answer.
Whenever we see each other,
we pick up where we left off ...
You are my friend ... for life ...

Ode to a Fallen Leaf

Oh fallen leaf,
thou once wast green,
the glory of the tree.

Shade for the passerby,
refuge for the mother,
whilst children scampered among daisies.

Thy color changed,
to brave shades
of red, gold, and rust.

When thou fell,
from branch to ground,
thou crowned earth's floor.

I passed by and admired,
thy cloak of brilliant bravery,
and saddened,
I watched as thou were collected into piles
by the road.

In monstrous black bags,
thou wast stashed
as trash,
and I thought this a tragedy
of God's splendor.

Though thou wast not deemed
fair enough
for her front lawn,
Fake leaves adorn her mantle
in honor of thy beauty!

The Farm

I stopped by a lovely farm just the other day
and found an obliging shed,
filled with goodies.
Mother said that we must wait
for the farmer's wife.
It was quite inviting though,
... from the outside step.

Apple Adventures

Come, my sister, my childhood companion...
I will help to ease your burden.
We will share a spot under floating apples,
and I will walk with you, carrying your tote.
Let us gather our apples for Mother,
as afternoon draws to an end.
A welcoming kitchen awaits.

Fall Fancies

My Dears,

As you well know, autumn brings me much joy. As the air cools, and the leaves dance from limb to path... as sunlight fades in late afternoon... as the tips of my children's noses turn cherry red... I am renewed. There is a briskness to my step, there is a song in my heart...

I have been busy in the kitchen these many fall days. Applesauce bubbles in the kettle, filling the kitchen with the delicious aroma of cinnamon and spice. Beeswax candles are hand-rolled and ready to be wrapped as gifts. My hands and heart have been full this season.

Recently, Lady Josephine joined me for tea, and we shared cinnamon ricotta crepes with a plum sauce, lively banter, and as always, warm exchange.

My recipe box is full of fall favorites, and I do hope you all will join me soon for some of my famous applesauce bread!

With a loving heart, I remain,

Lucinda Jane

Guinevere's Birthday

I happened upon Mother's trunk
and found a world of treasures masked as memories...

... a wedding shoe, a nightdress from her wedding night,
one of her dolls...

I played with her brooches, a pearl watch, a hankie...
I gazed up as she called my name...

I am two years old today, my mother's daughter ....
I am her gift.

Happy Birthday, Guinevere Katharine Blythe!
I love you!!!

"Traces of Mischief"

If one looks closely,
'neath a nest of blond locks,
petulant petaled lips, and dimpled fingers...

If one looks beyond
ruffles and lace,
raspy giggles,
and dancing eyes...

One will find
traces of earth,
merriment
and mischief...

On tender knees of little fallen angels.

A Longing Heart

My Dears it has been longer than a fortnight since we've written. My heart is saddened. I do so enjoy the summer months but alas is does make it difficult for communication. So may parties, balls and summers at the lake take up so much social time that I scarce have time to keep up with my correspondence.

Please know you are in my hearts and thoughts almost daily. I pray for fall. The cool breezes and lagging times are close in my sight.

I leave you with my longing heart,

"Tucking Lace"

My Dears!

You know how bothersome tucking lace can be. I don't fancy such trifles of womanhood. Many a time, I'm without my lace tuck because it has slipped! And my dears, it simply isn't fitting!

And then there's the bother of finding a becoming piece of lace...

How fortuitous it is that a dear friend of mine hand-crafted these lovely lace tucks for my frocks on the occasion of my birthday.

I have only to attach the loop to my corset, and my lace tuck is in place!

Josephine to Tea

My Dearest Josephine,

It is with a bursting heart that I await our lovely visit this very day!

To see my dear friend, to hear her laugh, to witness the sparkle of her eyes, is a treasure to my spirit.

I do hope the children will enjoy themselves... I had hoped to let them play in the garden, but alas, the gray skies forbid such frolicking... There is much to occupy them in the nursery. I'm confident their spirits will soar...

Come, my friend, and let us take tea together ... let us renew our friendship, once again...

Your dear friend,

Lucinda Jane

Knickers for Gideon

My Dears,

What joy it brings to me to think that my nephew will arrive any day now! We patiently await with great anticipation his most joyous birth!

It was my privilege to sew for him a lovely set of knickers for his Dedication Ceremony this summer.

Daisy possessed a dainty toddler pillowcase at her shoppe in the Spa of Ballston, which she agreed to sell to me for ten shillings.

A stitch here and there, and it was transformed into a darling set of knickers!

My dear friend, Beatrix Potter was kind enough to paint her clever Peter Rabbit friend on a set of buttons for the pant cuffs! I do so love her illustrations. Her charming stories are much loved in my home... Did you know that she and I are such beloved friends, that she named two sweet characters after me? ... "Lucinda" and "Jane!"

Kindest Regards,

Lucinda Jane Wordsworth

"Mother's Doll"

Mother journeyed into her hope chest in search of some old friends...

Many of her hopes, and some of my own, found their way into my very own hope chest...

It is now warmed by many treasures...

This little doll stopped along the way, and decided to stay a while with me ...

What shall we call her?

She was once called Hannah, when Mother was a child...

... I admire her shoes ...

I would like to call her Bitsy, Adelaide, or Clara ...

Yours Truly,
Guinevere Katharine Blythe

Blessings for Josephine

This day has been one of mixed mercies...

The rain has come, which has been much desired for grandmother's herbs...

And although the rain bestows fertility of earth and spirit,

Oft times it leaves us in want of the rainbow's promise...

While soil and soul graciously accept the gift of rain,

Our hearts may wander to days of sun ... remembrances of yesteryear...

This day of mixed mercies,

Is one that has brought thoughts of you...

Blessings upon you, my dear friend,

As days of sun await us, and tender soil begs our gentle steps ...

Ever Yours,

Lucinda Jane

Buttons & Daisies

Mother has sewn buttons on my apron made of hankies...

These buttons afford me two pockets...

One for my tea pouches, and the other to gather daisies...

It is quite efficient, and rather useful.

Shall we take tea?

I must ready my daisy centerpiece...

~Lucinda Jane, mother of Guinevere...

Guinevere's Moment

While I am young,
I'm obliged to pursue simple pleasures.

... fiddling with Mother's hair pins ...
... wearing my nightdress with Sunday's shoes...
... hiding pebbles in my palms ...

As I grow,

I am learning quickly ...
Alas, you slowly forget ...

You've forgotten the magic of trickling water,
from roof top,
from tree limb,
from faucet.

I've just found it.

You are folding laundry, planning for tomorrow.
I am touching magic water, enjoying this moment.

I am almost two years old.

Here and There

My Dearest Lady Lucinda Jane,

I am always filled with wonder upon receiving your posts! You are gifted with beautiful words.

The glorious news of the name of the expected child was received with great joy. What a wonderful name for a son! Our prayer are with your sister during her delicate situation.

Thank you for sharing the beautiful time you had with your friends at your tea. You paint a picture with words and leave us longing to be there.

And lastly, with your permission I shall hang the lovely painting of your garden in my parlour. The colours blend so well and remind me of the Queen's gardens in London.

Ever Cordial,
Lady Jocelyn Victoria Shefflield-Wimsley

Greetings to Georgiana

My Dearest Lady Georgiana,

My heart was overjoyed with the past that you would be joining our bee society. Your grace, extraordinary beauty and wistful humor are oft spoken of in the high society circle of London.

How honored we are by your presence.

Ever Cordial,
Lady Jocelyn Victoria Shefflield-Wimsley

A thought

Next week I shall begin my operations on my hat, on which you know my principal hopes of happiness depend. - J.A.

A Visit to the Hothouse

My Dears,

Among my favourite past-times is a light ramble in the fields behind the cottage where the peonies, flocks, and daisies bloom. I gather the buds and blossoms as the gentle breeze caresses my face, and the grass teases my toes... a wild sprig or two may flirt with my ankles as it sneaks 'neath the hem of my skirts...

Occasionally, when the rains come and seem to dampen the spirits of the wild flowers, I must resort to purchasing my blooms at the hothouse. Of course, they are quite well groomed. The colours are vivacious and their perfume fills the cottage...

It is a different excursion altogether when one visits the hothouse. One must always wear one's bonnet, tuck lace, and polish their shoes for such a visit. There are no such customs in the fields behind the cottage. One's hair may flow freely, and one's feet may be undressed...

I do so love a tender bouquet. As my peonies beg their farewell to the month of June, I must visit the hothouse within a fortnight...

True?

Miss Bigg writes me word that Miss Blachford is married. but I have never seen it in the Paper. And one may be as well be single, if the Wedding is not to be in print.

(From our Dear J.A)

Ever,
Prudy

Ode to a Clutch

There is something to be said of a fine purse.

The onlooker gazes with admiration and oft times a tinge of envy ... and the hand which holds it knows of the secrets therin.

And although a fine clutch can travel the world, enter the parlours of duchesses and the tea rooms of refined society,
despite the strong desire of its companion, it simply cannot enter the washtub...

To Tea

My Dears,
I've just had a few wonderful friends to tea this very afternoon. Among the guests were Eliza, Beatrice, Kitty, Clara, and Annabelle. Sadly, Charlotte was not able to attend, as her horse needed to be shod at the very last moment! It was quite distressing to know that she was without her carriage, but alas, I have saved her a scone! We browsed the finest catalogues from London and sipped afternoon tea. I served homemade blueberry scones with homemade Devonshire Cream, fresh chilled fruit and cream, and of course savory sandwiches. It was quite delightful, and my heart is full this day. Annabelle won the door prize, and she chose one of my finest venetian lace brooches! I wish to have you all to tea when you are next in the country. I am famous for afternoon tea! In my own circle of couse, it has been said ... (smile...)

I remain,

Lucinda Jane

The Healing Home

"Stop, stay at home, my heart and rest; Home-keeping hearts are happiest."

~ Henry Longfellow

My Dearest Ladies,

I regret to advise that I am much cumbered with sickness these many days. I have struggled amidst aches and pains of the throat and chest. I have fallen ill with fever as well. It is with a weak body that I embrace my quill this evening.

I beg of you, my dear friends, please say a prayer for myself and for the children. I fear they shall grow ill as well. My dear mother has been stricken as well, and my dear sister is in a delicate condition, so my resources have been exhausted. Although, I do thank my dear friend, Josephine, who has offered her services in any way for which the situation calls.

I write not to burden you with my particular set of woes, but rather, because I was heartened by this wonderful tribute to motherhood, given by Longfellow. How true it is. As I look around my home this evening, I see that it breathes with life, and it whispers secrets to my soul. These many years I have devoted myself to my home, husband, and children, and when my eyes travel the corridors, I see a bit of myself in every element.

I seek not the pleasures of travel. I seek not the gifts of this present world. I do not search after great wisdom or prosperity. I do not covet that which is not mine. I do not keep the company of fools. Rather, I seek the solace of home and the hearts of those who live here. I search for the voice of my Creator, and the blessings only He can bestow. I have loved that which is mine, and cherished those things. And I've found the company of a few dear friends who have become as sweet perfume to my spirit...

I love you all dearly, and I pray the best of health to you all...

Ever Yours,

Lucinda Jane Wordsworth ~

As Charles Dickens Says...

"Have a heart that never hardens, and a temper that never tires, and a touch that never hurts."

Just wanted to share my favorite quote with the ladies of lace and lavender. When first I heard this quote, about 15 years past, It changed my thinking about every day situations.

What a brave and inspiring man he is! His wise words are moving and set my heart a blaze.

Ever Cordial,
Lady Jocelyn

My Inaugural Script

Dearest "L & L",

It is with great honor I accept this invitation. However; there isn't enough ink in my well to supply my quill sufficiently. Mercy me, what a quandary! I fear I shall faint over the matter. As soon as I find my smelling salts I shall return, post-haste, to commence this conversation.

Ever Cordial,
Lady Jocelyn

Of Lace ...

My Darlings,

You must see! I have found yet another divine piece of lace with which to design brooches! I have such joy when I find a shoppe which carries a lovely piece of lace! I snatch it right up, and I scarce view the price tag! When I next visit London, I will proudly wear my new lace!

What Joy

Dearest Lucy,

You are a wonder. Both Jocelyn and I were so pleased and happy to receive our gifts on Saturday. Sir John also was most joyed at the lovely painting you bestowed on their home. It will be taken to London this week to be properly framed.

I adore my sachet! You truly are a kindred spirit for I had just told Sir Andrew not a fortnight ago that I longed for a nice sachet to go in my 'delicate's' drawer and there simply was not anything to be found this side of London. But alas I know now that my worry was in vain for you had prepared the best of gifts for me.

Lucy my dear the cards you sent were simply beautiful, not only in design and color but in verse, both prewritten and you very own words. Please accept the most heartfelt thanks for the gifts that are tangible as well as the sweet gift of your friendship. You are more precious to me than you realize.

I leave you with a full heart,
All my love,

My Darlings,

I write as though my fingers have wings this day. My heart is full of joy, and my soul doth rejoice in God my savior.

Today, My Prudence, I have received your lovely letter and my stamp holder. My dear, how sweet of you to think of my correspondence! My new postage stamp holder sits next to my table of letters, and happily it obliges me! Our darling Guinny will grow to love her new book. Books are always a treasure in our home, especially those which are hard-bound. These are a gift indeed! I have been reading it a bit myself this day, and I admit, I'm yet a child at heart!

In honor of "Tea With Jane Austen," I have sewn a few lavender scented tea bag sachet pouches! These are lovely for little girls as they pretend to take tea in their mother's china tea cups! They smell of lavender and chamomile, and the ribbons and buttons are the strings and tags of a tea pouch!

Among my important items of note, I wish to extend a warm and joyous welcome to our newest member, Georgiana! Please, Lady Georgiana, you must send us post with haste and introduce yourself to our society, as the ladies of the north country will yearn to know you!

Ladies, I must make haste. This very evening, Lady Nancy Grandquist is visiting our parish for a very important gathering of ladies. It is our annual conference, and Mr. Wordsworth was able to take the evening off and care for the children so that I might attend. I must set my curls and I must tuck a little lace...

My dears, my love to you all.

With Joy,

Lucinda Jane Wordsworth

A New Member.

Ladies please help me in welcoming Georgiana Elizabeth Fitzwilliam to our little society.

Guinevere's Flowers

"Once, when I was very little, me feet became curious... One step.. two steps... ten bare toes telling tales of prickly grass... Maybe if I fall to my bottom this tickle will go away... Will someone hold my flowers, please?"

Dear Ladies,

Just a gentle reminder that this year's theme for Kindred Spirit week is 'Tea with Jane Austen'. I can scarce believe this glorious week has crept upon us this quickly. The celebration will begin May 24th and conclude on May 30th. For the newest members of our little society this is a week to celebrate your kindred spirit sister. You can send a card or note by post with well wishings that remain with the code of the society. A small gift or token of appreciation is also acceptable.

I leave you with a heart full of anticipation for this week,

Blue Sky

My Dearest Ladies,

I am writing to easy my heavy heart. I will set you at rest, I, my Andrew, and family are all in good health. I am heavy for I long to out of doors this fine Tuesday. The sky is a blue I think I haven't seen since I was but 12 years old. As I look out it is pleading with me to come out and enjoy the beauty. But alas I have much work to be done this very day. I am plotting, this very moment, to somehow escape for a cup of tea in my garden unbeknownst to anyone. I dare say I will be caught but there is a sliver of me who doesn't care.

Daringly Scared,
Prudy

Sunday, May 17, 2009

My Dears,

As the last rays of sunshine dance with the evening breeze, and the branches oblige with a wave offering, I sit by my desk with quill in hand and give thanks for this lovely Sunday. It has been a day of rest in the Lord.

After our service today, the ladies of the parish gathered for our monthly sewing circle, and I enjoyed their delightful company immensely. We talked of baby names, and I shared with them "Cordelia Elisabeth," my name of preference should Mr. Wordsworth and myself be blessed with another daughter one day. I sewed a baby bonnet for a young mother-to-be in our parish, and I then hastened home to spend the remaining afternoon with my children.

We scampered outside for several hours with Grandmother Kathryn, and followed with a drive to Willow Marsh Farm with Grandmother Rose to purchase fresh cow's milk. Grandmother Rose prefers the fresh farm milk to the local grocer's milk. It is a bit pricier, and some may say not prudent in such times as these, but the drive is lovely and the children enjoyed themselves.

My children are now in the washtub and I must hasten to a close. Bedtime is upon us presently, and I will retreat to a quiet evening, whilst I await the return of Mr. Wordsworth.

I am obliged to catch up on some of my letters, and a baby quilt awaits some sewing ... this gentle evening may render itself a willing partner to my mild ambitions ...

My Love,
Lucinda

Josephine,

You simply must stop at the new sweet shoppe near the Spa of Ballston when you next visit. The spring waters are medicinal and have been proven to have aided with tuberculosis, the Medbury Inn is a home away from home, and the sweet shoppe is divine, carrying all the tastiest french truffles! I do hope that Mr. Wordsworth and myself are able to stay at the Inn very soon. We do so enjoy the spa waters... and the sweets!

Pew Dolls...
... while in sweet song you raise your voice to our Lord, and the little ones wiggle 'neath your arms, hiding under pews... surrender your hankie to their little hands... tying a knot for a head and a knot for each arm... with reverent hush, these little dolls quietly spill from the pew... with brave spirits, they swing from baby's hand... they speak not a word... while they are cradled in dimpled hands amidst the joyful sounds of praises...

My Little Lady Guinevere, 1 year ago...

"For this child I prayed, and the Lord heard my petition..."

Guinevere Katharine Blythe,
May you grow in grace, beauty, and the fear of the Lord. May you bring honor to your family, joy to your friends, strength to the weary. One day, may you wear your mother's veil...

Greetings, My Dears

My Dear Friends,

I write to you in haste, as the duties of motherhood and home are pressing upon me this day. I have but sought the heart of my two dear friends, Prudence Darling and Josephine, and sweet words of friendship and promise have lifted my soul this very day.

As I sit by my window, calling to mind the image of my children splashing in the bird bath, just moments ago, I am slowly finding an inner peace. I felt an urgency to sit with quill in hand and pen these thoughts.

Today, at this moment, I needed to be your friend, Lucinda Jane. And my dear friends, Prudy and Josie, I am excited about our society.

My soul has been much weary this past fortnight, and I thirst for a moment of refreshing, by the Spring of Friendship.

Where, pray tell, is Lady Jocelyn? Please urge her to make haste and pen her thoughts.

Until we meet again, my friends, God Bless you and keep you safe...

With Warm Regards,

Lucy
